What is Cervical Cancer?

Cervical cancer develops when abnormal cells in the lining of the cervix grow uncontrollably. It usually develops slowly over time and is often preceded by precancerous changes. Regular screening through Pap smears and HPV testing can detect these changes early, significantly reducing the risk of progression to cancer.

Common Symptoms:

  • Abnormal vaginal bleeding (after intercourse, between periods, or after menopause)

  • Unusual vaginal discharge

  • Pain during intercourse

  • Pelvic pain

  • Fatigue or unexplained weight loss (in advanced stages)

These symptoms often appear in later stages, making routine screening essential.

Risk Factors:

  • Human Papillomavirus (HPV) infection – the leading cause

  • Early sexual activity or multiple partners

  • Smoking

  • Weakened immune system

  • Long-term use of oral contraceptives

  • Family history of cervical cancer

  • Lack of regular Pap smear tests
