What is Kidney Cancer?

Kidney cancer most commonly begins in the renal cortex, the outer part of the kidney. The most prevalent type is Renal Cell Carcinoma (RCC), though other types like transitional cell carcinoma and Wilms’ tumor (in children) also occur. Many kidney cancers are detected incidentally during scans for other conditions.

Common Symptoms:

  • Blood in urine (hematuria)

  • Persistent pain in the side or lower back

  • A lump or mass in the abdomen or flank

  • Unexplained weight loss

  • Fatigue or weakness

  • Fever not caused by infection

  • High blood pressure or anemia (in some cases)

Because symptoms often appear in later stages, routine health checkups are crucial for early detection.

Risk Factors:

  • Smoking – significantly increases risk

  • Obesity – alters hormone levels and kidney function

  • High blood pressure

  • Family history of kidney cancer

  • Prolonged dialysis treatment

  • Certain genetic conditions (e.g., Von Hippel-Lindau disease)

  • Occupational exposure to toxins like cadmium and asbestos

Treatment Overview:

Dr. Tinku Takia uses a comprehensive and patient-specific approach to treat kidney cancer, including:

  • Chemotherapy (where applicable) – though kidney cancer is often resistant

  • Targeted Therapy – drugs that block cancer growth pathways

  • Immunotherapy – stimulates the immune system to attack cancer

  • Multidisciplinary Care – involving urologists, radiologists, and nephrologists
