What is Oral Cancer?

Oral cancer refers to malignant growths that develop in the tissues of the mouth or oropharynx (throat). Most oral cancers are squamous cell carcinomas, which begin in the flat cells lining the mouth and throat. Timely diagnosis and treatment significantly improve recovery and survival rates.

Common Symptoms:

  • Persistent mouth sores that don’t heal

  • White or red patches inside the mouth

  • Lumps or thickening in the cheek or jaw

  • Difficulty in chewing, swallowing, or speaking

  • Numbness in the mouth or tongue

  • Chronic sore throat or hoarseness

  • Loose teeth or jaw pain

If any of these symptoms persist for more than two weeks, it’s important to seek medical evaluation.

Risk Factors:

  • Tobacco use – including cigarettes, cigars, and chewing tobacco

  • Alcohol consumption – especially when combined with tobacco

  • HPV infection – particularly HPV type 16

  • Excessive sun exposure – for lip cancer

  • Poor oral hygiene

  • Family history of cancer
