What is Ovarian Cancer?

Ovarian cancer occurs when abnormal cells in the ovaries begin to grow and divide uncontrollably, forming a tumor. The most common type is epithelial ovarian cancer, which starts on the surface of the ovary. It can quickly spread to the pelvis and abdomen if not detected early.

Common Symptoms:

  • Abdominal bloating or swelling

  • Persistent pelvic or abdominal pain

  • Difficulty eating or feeling full quickly

  • Frequent or urgent urination

  • Unexplained fatigue

  • Weight loss or gain around the abdomen

Since these symptoms are often mistaken for other conditions, early diagnosis is challenging but crucial.

Risk Factors:

  • Family history of ovarian or breast cancer

  • Inherited genetic mutations (BRCA1/BRCA2)

  • Age over 50

  • Never having been pregnant

  • Endometriosis

  • Hormone replacement therapy

  • Personal history of certain cancers
