What is Pancreatic Cancer?

Pancreatic cancer occurs when abnormal cells in the pancreas grow uncontrollably, forming a tumor. The most common type is pancreatic adenocarcinoma, which starts in the ducts of the pancreas. Due to its rapid progression and resistance to some treatments, early and aggressive intervention is critical.

Common Symptoms:

  • Abdominal pain that radiates to the back

  • Unexplained weight loss

  • Jaundice (yellowing of skin and eyes)

  • Loss of appetite

  • Nausea and vomiting

  • Fatigue and weakness

  • Changes in stool (greasy or pale) or new-onset diabetes

These symptoms are often subtle and may mimic other conditions, making early diagnosis challenging.

Risk Factors:

  • Smoking – a major risk factor

  • Chronic pancreatitis

  • Family history of pancreatic cancer

  • Genetic syndromes (e.g., BRCA2 mutations, Lynch syndrome)

  • Diabetes

  • Obesity

  • Age over 60
