What is Penile Cancer?

Penile cancer begins in the skin or tissues of the penis, most commonly as squamous cell carcinoma. It typically starts on the foreskin or glans (head of the penis) and may spread to nearby lymph nodes or tissues if not detected early. Though uncommon, it can be life-threatening in advanced stages.

Common Symptoms:

  • A growth, sore, or ulcer on the penis that doesn’t heal

  • Redness, irritation, or a rash

  • Thickening of the penile skin

  • Foul-smelling discharge

  • Bleeding from the lesion

  • Swelling at the end of the penis or in the groin

  • Pain or discomfort during urination

Early signs are often painless, so men should not delay medical evaluation if symptoms persist.

Risk Factors:

  • Human Papillomavirus (HPV) infection

  • Poor genital hygiene

  • Phimosis (inability to retract the foreskin)

  • Smoking

  • Multiple sexual partners

  • Age over 50

  • Lack of circumcision (in some cases)
