What is Rectal Cancer?

Rectal cancer starts in the lining of the rectum and may spread to nearby tissues or lymph nodes. It usually begins as small, noncancerous growths called polyps, which can become cancerous over time. Early detection through screening, such as colonoscopy, significantly increases the chances of a cure.

Common Symptoms:

  • A persistent change in bowel habits (diarrhea, constipation, or narrowing of stool)

  • Rectal bleeding or blood in the stool

  • Unexplained weight loss

  • Fatigue or weakness

  • A feeling that the bowel doesn’t empty completely

  • Abdominal discomfort or cramping

Many symptoms overlap with other gastrointestinal conditions, so medical evaluation is essential if they persist.

Risk Factors:

  • Age over 50

  • Family history of colorectal cancer or polyps

  • Inflammatory bowel diseases (Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis)

  • Diet high in red or processed meats

  • Low physical activity and obesity

  • Smoking and heavy alcohol use

  • Genetic syndromes like Lynch syndrome or FAP
